Kim from The Style Project Shops SCMP
With autumn here, my thoughts have turned to decorating both my city and country homes for the cooler months ahead – well that’s this week’s excuse!
Cooler weather means more time indoors and that’s the perfect excuse, if I ever needed one, to go in search of some new pieces to decorate with. I was looking for lamps to add a glow to both the living room and master bedroom, along with a few pieces to finish off the guest bedroom and whatever else came my way.
Bright and early I head off to Supa Centa Moore Park.
I arrived early and parking was a breeze, I then took my trusty huge carry-all and sprinted up the escalators. Now I’m not one to amble along or roam from store to store, I’m more of an attack and conquer type of shopper. With our recently purchased country home in need of sprucing up, I put on my “shopping shoes” and set off in search of just the right items to finish off some of the rooms in our home, just in time for Easter entertaining. Now that we’ve finished the decorating (well for the time being) and we’re comfortable in the house and with the cooler weather approaching, it’s now time to start the mammoth task of painting a house that hasn’t been painted in years and years.
The best part of this journey is that we have years and years to finish it! The tiler starts work on the kitchen and laundry this week so that’s another task finished. So please ignore the boring walls and the chipped paint and focus on the rooms…
City House Living Room
My first stop was Orson & Blake for a gold tray/vase that I knew would sit perfectly on the round coffee table in my city living room. The candle comes from Bed Bath N’ Table and this limited edition Ecoya candle fills the room with a lovely wintery fragrance. I’ve only had the tray a short while but swapped out the flowers, books and objects to switch it up a bit. I love to be able to use things in more than one way and I’m sure this tray will be perfect at Christmas time, filled with glasses of champagne and handmade chocolates.
This rabbit cake stand came from Adairs and while it’s original intention was for baked goods, for me it’s the perfect Easter egg holder. Paired with the bunnies, similar to the ones at Adairs (I’d bought these elsewhere) I added new ribbons to their necks for a fresh look. Once Easter is finished I’ll add some cupcakes or dessert to the cake plate.
Since moving into the house, I’d been looking for the perfect bedside lamps. While gold, velvets, leopard print and rich textured wallpaper all work well in the city house, I wanted something that would add some shine to the room but not overpower it. Copper works beautifully with the natural linens, greys and chocolates of our country retreat and when I saw these copper lamps at My House I fell in love with them. They’re the perfect way to finish off the room and the perfect metallic to go with the linen.
Freedom had the two glass and linen Crest table lamps that I’ve added to the mantelpiece, either side of the mirror. With such a large and bold pendant light in the centre of the room, I was looking for something subtle and in keeping with the rest of the space and the linen shades were perfect. I’ve also added the rattan table runner from Freedom and I like the texture it adds to the table along with the timber trays. The Bordeaux clock was another purchase from MyHouse and just the right size that I’d been looking for. Under the clock are some mint and grey bowls from Freedom that I intend to use for dips, nuts and all things decadent over the Easter break.
Adairs was my next stop and their M & R Aroma range of homewares products are lovely, so I purchased the laundry detergent and room spray. Room sprays are a bit of an obsession of mine and I’m always asking for new ones for Christmas and birthday gifts. I tend to use the muskier tones in the city and for the country, fresh floral tones. I did a load of white sheets that span around on the hills hoist – love it! – And when I got into bed that night you could smell the floral tones on the sheets. They sit on a small timber table that I found in Freedom. This would normally be for displaying food but I like the idea of glamming up the laundry a little. The addition of the birds just finished it off.
Fantastic Furniture had the white butlers table, which was amazing value for only $35. With guests due within the next week and only one bedside table in the guest room, I knew this would be the perfect addition. This table came in a variety of colours and I might pop back to get a black one to add to the living room to use as a side table. Bed Bath N’ Table had a neutral coloured hot water bottle and the cover was so soft I knew that guests would appreciate this as the temperatures plummeted. I then came across a vintage white cane chair at a local second hand store and that finished off the room perfectly.
