HOW TO THINK LIKE A STYLIST WHEN
DECORATING. BY MEGAN MORTON.
While there is not a day that goes by without someone asking ‘How To be A Stylist,’ I think the best advice to give is How To Think Like A Stylist.
The job of an interior stylist is an incredible one - one day you are working up a delicious palette for a lounge room, the next day you are designing a laundry to rival Diane Keaton’s in Something’s Gotta Give. Some days are dedicated to cutlery while others are reserved in search for THE perfect Belgian grey linen. But the one thing that underpins most days is giving each space some soul.
So, with a shopping day at Supa Centa Moore Park planned, here are my top 4 tips for to get some spirit and soul into your space:
1. As objects of decoration, books are always a winner in conferring coziness on a space. Tightly organized volumes on bookshelves for a tailored look or loosely piled books on floors, second tier coffee tables give a room an artsy bent.
2. If your house has mostly vibrant tones from all the ends of the colour spectrum, think of introducing small touches of neutrals to unify the look. This works, trust me, no matter what style of room you’re doing.
3. When it comes to small object display, play stylist by throwing in an el cheap find in with your Wedgewood collection. It will uplift the group and give it a unique charm.
4. Consider opposites. For example, the ones that never let me down are rough and smooth/ black and white/ old and new/ European and American and the best one of all, the investment priced pieces and the inexpensive. Mixing the two is the key and I find that what you are looking for is about a quarter/ three quarter. Half and half looks too much at odds, where as this quarter/ three quarter is the ideal ratio to tip it into the territory of interesting.
