Shareen Joel, Shareen Joel Designs, on Building a Colour Palette
Interior architect Shareen Joel works from a neutral palette collating images and storyboards to convey the look and feel of the interior space. A material palette is then developed combining colours, finishes, fittings and fixtures. Typically, Shareen will combine classic materials such as light-coloured travertine or Carrara marble, pale natural timbers with shades of off-white painted walls and tiles that are contrasted against charcoal paint and steel.
From there, Joel assembles a neutral palette for the furnishings ensuring hero pieces such as sofas, dining tables and rugs are solid block colours that relate to the interior scheme. Opting for natural finishes like raw timber and aniline leathers these are then used to contrast dark felt, wool upholstery and 100% linens.
Shareen recommends that large-scale items such as sofas and dining settings are finished in solid, neutral colours and uses artworks to inject colour into interiors. "Art has an emotion that furniture doesn’t have – I like to inject colour into interior spaces with a print, painting or photograph. Paintings and sculptures personalise the space," she explains.
