Interior designers Shareen Joel, Arent&Pyke and Greg Natale share their ‘how to’ when it comes to approaching colour, with loads of insider tips on creating vibrant, livable spaces.

Greg Natale, Greg Natale Designs, on Making an impact with colour and pattern
Known for his use of colour and patterns in interiors, Greg Natale, works with softer shades and faded tones than in previous years. Using contrasting colours to create balance, such as green patterned wallpaper, Natale will balance the green with a contrasting solid colour such as a black table and finish the look by placing something white, a reflective lamp or an object on the black table surface.

Another technique Greg applies is using two contrasting colours such as a green paired with softer lilac tones, anchoring the combination with solid blocks of black or white. Whatever the final palette, Greg recommends continuing the theme throughout the house for continuity. Head to his website for images of how to use patterns in interiors.

‘In home decorating we should consider colour the same way we do when we dress ourselves. Just as your shoes, belt and bag compliment an outfit, we use a similar process when layering an interior.’ He explains, adding ‘not to look to the catwalk for inspiration, as not all fashion colours work in interiors.’
